What is the FSC?
The FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) is the world’s most trusted organization for ensuring responsible forest management. Its mission is to protect forests by upholding strict environmental and social standards and preventing illegal or destructive logging practices. With globally recognized standards and the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders – environmental groups, social organizations, businesses, and forest owners – the FSC is internationally regarded as the most credible system for sustainable forestry. Certifications are issued by independent auditors and reviewed annually. Today, around 200 million hectares of forest worldwide are FSC-certified. The FSC system ensures that forests are managed in line with the social, economic and environmental needs of current and future generations. To guarantee that products carrying the FSC label truly come from certified sources, the FSC uses a strict Chain of Custody® (COC®) system. Every company in the supply chain – from forest to finished product – must document and prove that FSC‑certified materials always remain traceable. The FSC label can be found on a wide variety of wood‑based products including furniture, flooring, packaging, board materials and paper.
In Germany, around 1.44 million hectares of forest are FSC‑certified and nearly 4,000 companies hold FSC® Chain of Custody® certification (status as of 01/2022). In German forests, the FSC stands for a form of forest management that avoids overexploitation, promotes biodiversity and maintains transparency toward citizens and organizations. Clear-cutting during regular timber harvesting is prohibited and pesticides may only be used when legally required. FSC also supports the development of natural mixed forests, the protection of forest soils and the conservation of rare species and ecosystems. As a result, FSC‑certified forests are more resilient to changing climate conditions and can store more CO₂ over the long term.
The FSC label stands for a consistent and trustworthy certification process. The organization has developed a set of principles and indicators that form the basis of globally applicable FSC standards for forest management. Forests managed according to these standards can obtain FSC certification. The FSC also provides transparency and trademark security for companies and organizations committed to responsible, sustainable forestry. This ensures that all certified products truly meet the strict requirements of the FSC system.
The 10 global FSC principles

2. Workers’ rights and well‑being: The forest operation maintains and improves the social and economic conditions of all workers.
3. Indigenous peoples’ rights: The forest operation identifies and upholds the legal and customary rights of Indigenous peoples regarding ownership, use, and management of land, territories, and resources affected by forest management activities.
4. Community relations: The forest operation contributes to maintaining or enhancing the social and economic well‑being of local communities.
5. Benefits from the forest: The forest is managed to maintain or improve its long-term economic viability while supporting its social and ecological functions.

9. High conservation values: The forest operation maintains or enhances the condition of high conservation value areas.
10. Implementation of management activities: Management activities must support the economic, ecological, and social goals of the forest operation and must comply with all FSC principles and criteria.
