Seal protection bags – Protecting historical seals for over 20 years
Historical seals on charters, books or containers (sealed objects) have served for centuries as marks of authenticity and identification, as well as protection against unauthorized opening or falsification. Today, they are among the most sensitive components of historical archival materials and require reliable protection during storage, transport and handling.
Based on practical conservation experience, certified conservators Kerstin Forstmeyer and Johannes Schrempf developed a new seal protection bag design for both suspended and attached seals between 1999 and 2001. The aim was to create a universally applicable, easy-to-use protective solution that prevents damage caused by pressure, impact, abrasion, scratches and contamination.
Special attention was paid not only to the shape of the bag but also to the selection of a suitable material. After extensive testing, the choice fell on an ageing-resistant, air-permeable, nonwoven material made of 100% pure polyester, with a basis weight of 300 g/m², with a material thickness of 2.0 mm. This mechanically consolidated needle-punched nonwoven material is free from plasticisers, lightfast and showed no adverse interaction with sealing wax.
The special design of the seal protection bag allows flexible use with a wide variety of seal types and attachment methods, without placing strain on delicate tags or cords. The corner joints are thermally welded, providing additional stability.
The developed design of the seal protection bag was patented and published by the German Patent Office on 6 March 2002. Since then, more than 500,000 seal protection bags have been successfully used in archives, libraries and collections, where they have become a trusted preservation solution.
