Honeycomb panels and lightweight foam panels
Honeycomb panels consist of strips of paper glued together, which are extruded with air and blown into their characteristic honeycomb shape. To stabilize the vertically standing paper strips, the honeycomb structure is bonded with a top and bottom layer.
Due to the honeycomb structure, the panels are very lightweight and stable. Their stability depends on three factors: the thickness or surface weight of the two cover layers, the wall thickness of the strip material and the density of the core (the honeycomb structure). Due to technical reasons, honeycomb panels with a thickness of less than 7 mm cannot be manufactured. KLUG honeycomb panels are made of guaranteed age-resistant board material, manufactured according to the technological standards of the EN ISO 9706. They are particularly suitable as backings for large-format artworks such as graphics, posters, wallpapers, textiles and paintings. The panels contain no optical brighteners and have passed the Photographic Activity Test (PAT) in accordance with the ISO 18916 standard.
Comparison of honeycomb panels and lightweight foam panels
1. Stability and load Capacity: Honeycomb panels offer exceptional stability and load-bearing capacity in terms of deflection (bending) and torsion, making them perfect for challenging, large-scale applications. In comparison, lightweight foam boards of the same thickness are less resistant to bending and torsion and buckle significantly faster under heavy loads.
2. Weight: Despite their high stability, honeycomb panels are surprisingly light in weight. Foam panels of the same thickness are approximately 35% heavier than honeycomb panels made of paper materials. The reduced weight of honeycomb panels facilitates handling and is particularly beneficial for large-size formats.
3. Environmental friendliness: KLUG Honeycomb panels are made from 100% ageing-resistant paper material. They are manufactured according to the technological standards of EN ISO 9706, making them environmentally friendly and fully recyclable. In comparison, foam panels consist of a polyurethane foam core with various surface materials. Such composite materials are difficult to dispose of in a pure form, are not bio-degradable or recyclable and contain a significantly higher amount of embodied energy.
KLUG Honeycomb panels are ideal for picture framing, archival storage, transporting artworks and for reinforcing large-format boxes for conservation purposes.
